On or off the mountain, conditions in Niseko can be extreme - so come prepared. Here are a few tips.

Standard ski gear -- pants, jacket, a helmet, 2 x goggles (spare pair for foggy goggle days)

Skis, boots, stocks (carve skis are fine, but locals recommend using powder skis with a minimum underfoot width of 89mm. Hire locally is an easy option)

If boarding, a snowboard longer than your usual length. You will need it as the snow will be deeper than anything you will have experienced anywhere.

Good gloves -- Your gloves should be much longer than standard gloves, if possible, that should go about 10cm beyond the wrist. (When you fall in powder it goes everywhere, so you want to have a really good seal between your gloves and your jacket. Also, its cold (-15C at the top of the mountain, and windy. If possible, bring some extra gloves and rotate them so that you always have dry gloves.

A full balaclava and/or neck warmer. Full body thermal underwear / long johns.

Note:
Baggage weight is a serious problem! Check with your airline but baggage allowance is generally 20 kilos, plus 5 kilos extra for ski gear. When you add the weight of all you ski gear, the bags themselves, ski clothes, non-ski clothes, then it will be very tight to fit into this allowance, so weight everything first.

DVDs -- Mushroom has a multisystem DVD player. We do stack a bunch of DVD's including some cool local boarding DVDs by Neil Hartmann but it can't hurt to bring some of your own.

Standard toiletries (plus a tube of Deep Heat ointment to apply to aching limbs)

CASH (But there is an ATM in Hirafu Village in the Yama Shizen East building)

Towels -- we supply 1 decent sized fluffy towel

Washing powder (we supply complimentary)

Your mobile (won’t work in Japan. You can rent one for around $100 with 1hr credit of International calls)

Running shoes, casual shoes (no good for knee-deep snow)
